October 16, 2026 — Viking has formally named its seven newest river ships at a pierside party in Amsterdam, with two ships present and five linked in by video from Egypt, Germany and France. Each was named by a travel-advisor godparent.

The ships

Ship Godparent Where it was during the ceremony
Viking Haki Carol Porter, The Roaming Boomers Amsterdam (in person)
Viking Rota Ealeen Wong, Expedia Cruises Amsterdam (in person)
Viking Halogi Carol Shaddix, Imagine Going There Rostock, Germany (video)

Viking Halogi and Viking Sjofn, built at Neptun Werft in Rostock, will begin carrying passengers in November; the report did not give their rivers or first sailing dates (TBA). Service dates for the other five were not given.

More ships on the way

Seatrade Cruise News reports Viking expects 18 more river ships by 2028, which would take its river fleet to 114, plus 11 more ocean ships by 2032 and two more expedition ships by 2031 — about 142 vessels in all.

What it means for airline travelers

  • New ships, new capacity: more Viking river sailings should mean more date choices in Europe and Egypt over the next two years.
  • Booked on Halogi or Sjofn in November? Confirm your embarkation city with Viking before buying flights, since the routes were not published.
  • No change to interline or travel-industry cruise rates was mentioned.
