October 16, 2026 — The US State Department has lowered its travel advisory for Tanzania from Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) to Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution). The change was posted on October 16, almost a year after it was raised on October 31, 2025. One region, Mtwara, stays at Level 3.
What changed
- Level: Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) → Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution), dated October 16, 2026.
- Previous change: The advisory was raised from Level 2 to Level 3 on October 31, 2025, when an unrest warning was added.
- Risks listed: Crime, terrorism, health, unrest, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, and the targeting of gay and lesbian people. The State Department added a health risk indicator with this update.
- Higher-risk area: The Mtwara Region, including the border with Mozambique and the A19 highway, remains at Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) because of terrorism. US government employees need special authorization to go there.
What it means for airline travelers
- Safari and Zanzibar trips are now under a Level 2 advisory, the same level many popular destinations carry. Read the full advisory before you go, as the risks listed still apply.
- Avoid the Mtwara Region and the Mozambique border area.
- The State Department added a health indicator. Check the CDC’s Tanzania destination page and talk to a doctor about vaccines well before your trip.
- Stay away from demonstrations, and be careful about photographing police, military or government buildings.
- US citizens can register with STEP, and Canadians with Registration of Canadians Abroad. Canada’s own advice for Tanzania may differ, so check travel.gc.ca.
