October 17, 2026 — Carnival Cruise Line has warned guests boarding Carnival Sunshine in Norfolk, Virginia, today to allow extra time: a downtown wine festival and a weekend closure of the eastbound Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel are expected to snarl traffic near the terminal.

The sailing

Carnival Sunshine leaves Norfolk at 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, on an eight-night Canada cruise with 3,002 guests, calling at Halifax, Charlottetown and Sydney before returning to Norfolk on October 25. The departure time and itinerary are unchanged.

The traffic problems

Issue When Impact
Town Point Virginia Fall Wine Festival, Town Point Park October 17–18, 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Street closures and heavy traffic less than a quarter-mile from the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, especially early in the morning
Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel repaving, eastbound I-64 toward Norfolk 9 p.m. Friday, October 16, to 5 a.m. Monday, October 19 Eastbound lanes closed on the usual route from Richmond International Airport (about a 90-minute drive)

Carnival reminded guests that everyone must be on board by the final boarding time on their boarding pass. Cruise Hive notes the line will not hold the ship for late arrivals, because the final manifest must reach U.S. Homeland Security at least 60 minutes before departure.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Flying into Richmond (RIC) for today’s sailing? The direct I-64 route is closed eastbound at the bridge-tunnel, so add time for a detour and check traffic before you leave the airport.
  • Norfolk International (ORF) is closer and avoids the bridge-tunnel closure; consider it for future Norfolk sailings, especially if you are flying standby and need a margin.
  • Follow police directions near the terminal and aim to arrive well before the final boarding time printed on your pass.
  • Returning October 25? The bridge-tunnel work is scheduled to end Monday morning, October 19, so it should not affect the trip home.
  • No change to interline or travel-industry cruise rates was mentioned.
