October 22, 2026 — An attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam on Wednesday evening killed two people and injured eight. Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority says flights have resumed. The US Mission issued a new security alert the same day, warning that hostilities could spread quickly and that Riyadh’s main airport is still suspended.

What’s new since yesterday

  • Dammam airport hit: The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said King Fahd International Airport was targeted on the evening of Wednesday, October 21. Two people were killed, one of them an Indian national, and eight were injured, The Week reported.
  • Flights diverted, then resumed: Flights heading to Dammam were briefly diverted and arrivals and departures were delayed. After damage checks, GACA said operations had resumed and air traffic was back to normal.
  • Oil field also attacked: India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the same wave of attacks hit Saudi Aramco’s Shaybah oil field in the Eastern Province, where one Indian national was injured.
  • Stranded pilgrims: India said about 3,000 stranded Umrah pilgrims, plus more than 10,000 others booked on available flights, returned home over the past week. Arrangements for the rest are still being worked out.

The US security alert of October 21

The US Mission to Saudi Arabia says Houthi forces backed by Iran have attacked civilian airports and other critical infrastructure, causing casualties and severe travel disruption. It warns hostilities “could escalate quickly” beyond the areas already affected.

Airport / route Status in the October 21 alert
King Khalid International (Riyadh, RUH) Operations remain suspended
King Abdulaziz International (Jeddah, JED) Open, with some delays and cancellations
King Fahd International (Dammam, DMM) Open, with some delays and cancellations
Land borders, including the King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain Open
Highways around Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran Open
Airports in Bahrain, Jordan, Oman, Qatar and the UAE Operating (check directly)

Note: The embassy’s alert lists Riyadh as suspended, so confirm any Riyadh flight directly with the airline before you set out.

  • The embassy lists Saudi Arabia Railways, SAT Transportation and SAPTCO as alternatives to flying and says to confirm schedules with them directly.
  • Saudi authorities warn that filming or sharing images of interceptions or impact sites creates legal liability. US citizens have been detained for photographing government buildings, airports and impact sites.
  • The embassy advises following Saudi Civil Defense cell-broadcast alerts, keeping your phone charged, staying away from windows during an aerial attack, and avoiding demonstrations.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Dammam and Jeddah are open, but neither is risk-free. Dammam was hit on Wednesday. If you must fly standby into Saudi Arabia, have a confirmed backup and money for a hotel in case flights are diverted or cancelled.
  • Don’t plan around Riyadh. Treat RUH as unavailable until the embassy says otherwise.
  • Know the overland options. The King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain is open, and airports in Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Oman and Jordan are operating, which gives you other ways out if Saudi flights stop.
  • Keep your camera away. Don’t photograph airports, damage or interceptions.
  • Register with STEP (US) or Registration of Canadians Abroad, and check whether your travel insurance excludes areas affected by armed conflict.
