October 23, 2026 — The US Embassy in Niamey issued a security alert on October 22 warning of a heightened risk of kidnapping of US citizens anywhere in Niger, including the capital.
What the alert says
- Who: US Embassy Niamey.
- Where: Countrywide, including Niamey.
- Embassy measures: Armored vehicles for all staff travel, restricted staff movement, a mandatory curfew and routine accountability checks. US government personnel are again under the restrictions of the Niger Travel Advisory.
- Advisory level: Niger remains at Level 4: Do Not Travel, for crime, unrest, terrorism, health and kidnapping. The level did not change.
- Advice: Stay alert, be cautious about unexpected deliveries and visitors, keep a low profile, take care at night, and make a check-in plan with family or your employer.
What it means for airline travelers
- Do not travel to Niger. The US advises against all travel. Niger is not a place to fly standby, because limited flights can leave you stuck with no quick way out.
- If you are already there: Make sure your passport is valid, enroll in STEP, and keep the embassy’s emergency numbers handy: +227 20-72-26-61 (business hours) and +227 99-49-90-66 (after hours).
- Most travel insurance policies exclude countries under a Level 4 advisory. Check yours.
