What it means for airline travelers
- Getting there: According to The Alpina Gstaad’s travel guide, Bern-Belp is the closest international airport, about 1 hour 20 minutes by car. Geneva is about 2 hours by car or 2 hours 40 minutes by train. Zurich is about 3 hours by car or 3 hours 30 minutes by train. Geneva and Zurich are Switzerland’s main international gateways and offer far more flights than Bern.
- Allow for the transfer. Even from Geneva, Gstaad is at least two hours away, so a same-day connection after a long-haul arrival leaves little margin. Plan an overnight near the airport if your flight could be late.
- Timing: The December 4 opening falls at the start of the Alpine winter season. Expect flights to Geneva and Zurich to be busy around the holidays.
- Industry rates: The announcement did not mention travel-industry or airline-employee rates. As with most new luxury openings, expect early availability to be limited.
