October 29, 2026 — A port workers’ protest blocked road access to Barcelona’s cruise terminals on Wednesday, October 28, leaving roughly 13,000 guests on four ships from Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, TUI Cruises and AIDA Cruises to walk to and from the city.

What happened

Port workers set up a protest and a burning barricade that cut off vehicle access to the terminals at the Moll Adossat. With no buses, taxis or transfers able to reach the piers, guests walked the roadway between the ships and the city center — up to about two miles each way, depending on the berth.

According to Cruise Hive, the dispute is over bonuses and pay disparities that the workers say breach their collective bargaining agreement. It was not aimed at cruise ships or tourism.

Ships in port

Ship Line Call type Voyage
Odyssey of the Seas Royal Caribbean Day visit 14-night transatlantic, Civitavecchia (departed Oct. 25) to Cape Liberty, N.J.
Norwegian Escape Norwegian Cruise Line Embarkation 16-night transatlantic to Port Canaveral, Fla.; first sailing after a two-week dry dock in Marseille
Mein Schiff 7 TUI Cruises Day visit 7-night sailing from Palma de Mallorca (began Oct. 22)
AIDAmar AIDA Cruises Day visit 7-night sailing from Palma de Mallorca (departed Oct. 25)

One Odyssey of the Seas guest said passengers could not get off until just before noon. A Norwegian Escape guest called the walk-in embarkation stressful because of the fear of missing the ship.

Outcome

  • No injuries were reported and no ship was in danger.
  • The protest ended well before scheduled departures, no ship left significantly late, and no guests were reported to have missed their ship.
  • How long the blockade lasted was not published (TBA). The cruise lines had not issued formal statements in the report.

Wider context

Also on October 28, the U.S. Embassy issued a countrywide alert for Spain about protests in the run-up to the country’s general election on November 29, 2026.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Arrive the day before. If you are flying standby into Barcelona to board a ship, get there a day early. A blocked terminal road can add hours to the final leg, and the ship will not wait.
  • Plan to walk if needed. Pack so you can manage your bags for up to about two miles on foot. A rolling bag beats a pile of loose luggage on a day like this.
  • Your problem, not the line’s. Cruise lines hold guests responsible for reaching the terminal on time, even when delays are outside their control. Travel insurance that covers missed departures is worth checking before you go.
  • Watch the news through November 29. With an embassy alert in place ahead of Spain’s election, more protests are possible. Check local news and your line’s app on the morning of embarkation.
  • Disembarking to fly home? Leave a wide gap before your flight, especially if you need to make an early standby list. Choose later flights on transatlantic-arrival or turnaround days.
  • No interline or travel-industry rate changes were involved in this story.
