October 30, 2026 — Update: The captain of Villa Vie Odyssey says a fuel shortage forced the residential ship to put its residents ashore in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. His account is the new development since our October 29 report on the company’s plan to file for Chapter 11.
What the captain said
- Captain Emanuele Giudice said 203 passengers left the ship because “our fuel situation was critical.”
- One generator and a chiller had been shut down.
- The ship’s planned departure on October 28 at 7 p.m. was delayed for lack of fuel.
- He said passengers were given 36 hours’ notice and later allowed back on board to collect belongings.
- He said many passengers had refused to pay a fuel surcharge.
- The ship plans to leave Cambodia on October 31. Its destination was not published (TBA).
CEO Mikael Petterson has told CBS that Villa Vie Residences plans to file for Chapter 11, blaming the rise in fuel costs after the war with Iran began in late February. The filing date and court are still TBA.
What it means for airline travelers
- Helping someone get home: Sihanoukville has limited long-haul service. A confirmed ticket on the first leg to a larger regional hub is often safer than relying on standby out of the region.
- Keep records: With a Chapter 11 filing expected, residents should keep receipts for cabin purchases, fees and the costs of getting home.
