EDMONTON, Canada — November 2, 2026 — Freezing fog and very low visibility at Edmonton International Airport (YEG) caused delays and cancellations from late Sunday, November 1 into Monday morning, November 2. Some arrivals from sun destinations and the U.S. were cancelled, and a small number of Vancouver flights were still cancelled on Monday morning.
What happened
- Sunday, November 1: CTV News reported that heavy fog delayed several flights arriving at and leaving Edmonton on Sunday.
- Late Sunday into Monday: The Traveler reported freezing fog and very low visibility from late November 1 into the early hours of November 2.
- Cancelled arrivals: according to The Traveler, cancellations included arrivals from Cancun and Puerto Vallarta operated by Canadian carriers, and at least one overnight arrival each from Las Vegas and Phoenix.
- Domestic routes: The Traveler reported cancellations on Edmonton–Calgary, Edmonton–Vancouver, Edmonton–Yellowknife and Edmonton–Fort McMurray late on November 1. A Houston arrival was significantly delayed.
- Monday morning: a small number of morning Vancouver flights were still cancelled on November 2.
- Not published: total counts of delayed, cancelled or diverted flights, the airlines involved by name, and any statement from the airport: TBA. The Traveler based its report on public flight-status boards and weather data.
- When it ends: no end time for the fog has been published: TBA.
What it means for non-revs
- Expect full flights after the fog lifts. Passengers from cancelled Calgary, Vancouver, Yellowknife and Fort McMurray flights, and from the cancelled sun and U.S. arrivals, will be rebooked first. Standby seats out of YEG and on return flights from Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Las Vegas and Phoenix may be scarce for the next day or two.
- Avoid the first wave of the morning. The fog hit late at night and in the early morning. If you can, list on a later morning or afternoon flight while fog is in the forecast.
- Do not plan a tight connection through YEG. A cancelled or late inbound can leave you stuck for the night. Leave a long buffer or travel a day early.
- Consider Calgary as a back-up if Edmonton loads look bad and you can get there by road, but check the weather there too.
- Carry on. With flights being cancelled and rebooked, a checked bag can end up on a different flight from you.
- Drive carefully. The Traveler advised using low-beam headlights and slowing down on foggy roads south of Edmonton on the way to the airport.
