What is happening
The oceanfront Marriott-brand resort shut its doors on November 2, 2026, as set out in a WARN notice filed in late August. That notice said the work would take at least five months and the hotel would stay closed throughout; 219 employees were temporarily laid off from November 3 and are to be recalled when work is done.
Rus Tourism News reports the project at $50 million (a figure it did not attribute to a source) and says it covers public spaces, restaurants, pools and wellness, following an earlier guest-room refurbishment. Its reported plans include five dining venues (Cordelia’s, Breakwater Provisions, Saltwater Social, Port House and Shoreline), a redesigned lobby, a new adults-only pool called Stillwater, an expanded Heavenly Spa with 11 treatment rooms and a thermal circuit, and new fitness equipment.

What it means for airline travelers
- Existing bookings: The resort is fully closed, so stays from November 2 into spring 2027 cannot be honored there. If you had a Thanksgiving, holiday or winter stay, contact Marriott or whoever you booked through to rebook. Day passes for the pool and spa are also off sale.
- Reopening date is soft: The April dates come from booking systems, and the original notice said the work could run longer than five months. Avoid non-refundable plans for early April until the hotel confirms.
- Airports: Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH) is on the island itself. Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV) is about 35 miles away, roughly 50 minutes to an hour by car, and generally has more flight choices.
- The island is open: Only this resort is closed. Hilton Head itself and other hotels on the island are operating as normal.
- Discount rates: No travel-industry or airline-employee rates were mentioned in the sources.
