Update to our earlier Spain coverage: what is new is that the CCOO union says the November 17 Adif strike will be a full 24-hour stoppage, that it would affect every train operator on the network, and that unions say more strike days are coming.
November 4, 2026 — The planned November 17 strike by staff at Adif, the state company that runs Spain’s rail infrastructure, has taken firmer shape. The CCOO union has confirmed a 24-hour stoppage at Adif that day, which it says will go ahead unless an agreement is reached first, Infobae reported on November 3. Because Adif runs the network rather than the trains, a strike there could affect all operators, including Renfe, Ouigo and Iryo.
What’s new
- Duration: 24 hours on Tuesday, November 17, according to CCOO. Exact start and end times: TBA.
- Formal call still pending: Que.es reported late on November 3 that the formal strike call and the minimum services, which are set by Spain’s Ministry of Transport, were still outstanding.
- Who is acting: The Adif works committee — CCOO, UGT, CGT, SF and SCF. The proposal has also been sent to Renfe staff for the same day. The reason given is rail safety after the Urda collision on October 28.
- More dates likely: The CGT union says further strike calls will follow after Adif’s and Renfe’s conflict committees meet on Thursday, November 5, and that they will come before Spain’s general elections. The works committee will review the situation on November 18. Dates: TBA.
- Canada: Global Affairs Canada updated its Spain travel advice on November 3. The overall level shown is “Exercise a high degree of caution.”

What it means for airline travelers
- If you are flying into Spain around November 10, 12 or 17 and planned to continue by train, have a backup: a domestic flight, bus or rental car.
- An Adif strike affects the whole network, so switching from Renfe to Ouigo or Iryo may not help on November 17.
- Domestic flights may fill up on strike days, so standby seats will be harder to get. Check loads early and keep a second option.
- Minimum-service timetables are usually published shortly before a strike. Check with your rail operator the day before you travel and ask about refunds or changes if your train is cancelled.
- Check whether your travel insurance covers strike disruption; strikes announced before you buy a policy are often excluded.
