November 6, 2026 — The U.S. Mission to the Netherlands has warned of a large protest in central Amsterdam on Sunday, November 8, which it says could draw 100,000 people or more and disrupt public transport across the city center.
What is planned
- Event: “De Rode Lijn Voorbij” (Beyond the Red Line), a protest over the Dutch government’s stance on Israel and Gaza. Organizers include Amnesty International, Oxfam Novib and Save the Children.
- When and where: Sunday, November 8, starting at 1:00 p.m. on the Museumplein. NH Nieuws reports the march runs from about 1:45 to 4:00 p.m. along Hobbemakade, Stadhouderskade, Overtoom, Amstelveenseweg, Cornelis Krusemanstraat and De Lairessestraat before returning to the Museumplein, with the event expected to last until about 5:00 p.m.
- Crowd size: The embassy says turnout could “reach and possibly exceed 100,000.” A similar protest in October 2025 was estimated at about 250,000 people.
- Advisory level: The U.S. rates the Netherlands at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, due to terrorism. No change was announced.

What it means for airline travelers
- Arriving at Schiphol on Sunday? Trains into Amsterdam will be busier than usual. If your hotel is near the Museumplein, Vondelpark or Leidseplein, expect closed roads and diverted trams from late morning, and allow extra time for a taxi.
- Heading to the airport on Sunday afternoon from central Amsterdam? Leave early and check GVB’s diversion page (gvb.nl/rodelijn) and the NS journey planner just before you set out.
- The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Concertgebouw sit on or beside the Museumplein. Plan museum visits for another day if you can.
- The embassy advises avoiding demonstrations, keeping a low profile and following Dutch police instructions. In an emergency, call 112.
- Enroll in STEP (U.S. citizens) or Registration of Canadians Abroad.
