October 1, 2026 — Zambia’s government formally declared a cholera outbreak on Wednesday, September 30. Cases have been confirmed in seven districts, including the capital, Lusaka.

The details

  • Announcement: Acting Health Minister Dr. Gilbert Siame made the declaration.
  • Cases: 304 confirmed cases and 11 deaths as of September 29. Eight of those deaths happened outside health facilities.
  • When it started: the first case was confirmed on August 13.
  • Districts affected: Lusaka, Chilanga, Chongwe, Chibombo, Chiengi, Nsama and Chikankata. These span five provinces.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Follow safe food and water practices in Lusaka and the affected districts. That means sealed or treated water, food that has been thoroughly cooked, and regular handwashing.
  • Talk to a travel-medicine provider about cholera prevention before your trip. CDC Travelers’ Health has the latest guidance.
  • Safari travelers: if your trip routes through Lusaka, ask your lodge or operator what water and food precautions they take.
  • Register your trip with STEP (US) or Registration of Canadians Abroad.
