October 2, 2026 — Portugal has started October with a run of strikes and protests. Lisbon city workers walked out for 24 hours on Friday, October 2, and easyJet’s Portugal-based cabin crew are striking from October 2 to 6, across the Republic Day holiday weekend. We found no strike affecting trains, the metro or airport operations as a whole.
The calendar
| Date | Who | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 2 (24 hours) | Lisbon municipal and parish workers (STML union) | City services. Demonstration at Praça da Figueira at 11:00. |
| Oct 2–6 | easyJet Portugal cabin crew (SNPVAC union) | easyJet flights at Lisbon, Porto and Faro. FTN News reports 443 flights cancelled and says easyJet expects to run about 55% of its schedule. |
| Oct 6 | Teachers (Fenprof) and staff of the migration agency AIMA | Schools and AIMA offices. AIMA handles residence permits, not airport passport control. |
| From Oct 10 | Bank workers | Bank branches |
| Oct 17 | CGTP-IN union federation | Demonstrations in Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra |
- Holiday: Monday, October 5, is Republic Day, so the easyJet strike covers a long weekend.
- US Embassy: the US Embassy in Lisbon has posted a demonstration alert about disruptions from nationwide strikes on October 2–6. We could not open the page today, so its details are not included here. The link is in the sources.
What it means for airline travelers
- Fuller flights: with hundreds of easyJet flights cancelled, displaced passengers are moving to other airlines. Standby seats to and from Lisbon, Porto and Faro will be harder to get through October 6.
- Trains and metro: no strike was found for these, so airport links should run normally. Check on the day.
- Central Lisbon: avoid the area around Praça da Figueira during demonstrations, and expect more on October 17.
- If you booked easyJet: the airline must offer a refund or rebooking for a cancelled flight. Check its app before leaving for the airport.
- Register your trip: use STEP (US) or Registration of Canadians Abroad to get embassy alerts directly.
