October 3, 2026 — The US Embassy in Brasília and four US consulates stopped all consular services on Friday, October 2, citing security concerns. No reopening date has been announced. Brazil holds the first round of its general election on Sunday, October 4.
What happened
- Posts affected: the embassy in Brasília and the consulates in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Recife and Porto Alegre.
- Emergency help: the alert, as quoted by wire services, tells US citizens not to come to the embassy, consulates or other US diplomatic facilities. Emergency contact is by phone.
- The threat: not described. Neither government has confirmed what it is.
- Australia: closed its Brasília embassy on October 2, citing the US alert.
- Brazilian police: Federal Police searched two addresses on October 2, in São Paulo and in Águas Lindas near Brasília. They made no arrests and said they found nothing to support the reported risk.
- Reopening: TBA. The Rio Times reports one consulate employee told applicants to come back Monday, October 5. That is unofficial.
- Election dates: first round October 4. A second round is scheduled for October 25, according to UK travel advice.
Government advisories
- United States: Level 2 (exercise increased caution). No change, and the advisory page does not mention the suspension.
- Canada: exercise a high degree of caution. We found no change in the risk level.
- United Kingdom: added information on the October 4 election and political events.
- We could not open the embassy alert itself. Its wording here comes from UPI and Reuters reports.
What it means for airline travelers
- Lost or damaged passport: in-person help at US posts in Brazil is not available right now. Guard your passport, carry a copy, and do not start a trip on a passport that is damaged or close to expiry.
- Stay clear of US diplomatic buildings and the streets around them, and of crowds near polling places on October 4 and in the days after.
- Flights: no source we read reported any effect on airports or flights. If that changes, standby seats out of São Paulo and Rio will tighten fast, so know your backup routings.
- Enroll in STEP (US) or Registration of Canadians Abroad so alerts reach you.
- Visa appointments: family or companions with US visa appointments in Brazil should expect them to be rescheduled.
