October 4, 2026 — Update to our October 3 story. Nigeria’s three-day public-sector warning strike ended on schedule on Sunday with no extension. The unions then gave the federal government a fresh ultimatum and said the next step would be a total strike.

What changed

  • Who: the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, backed by the Nigeria Labour Congress.
  • Status: the warning strike that began October 2 is over.
  • The threat: a total strike with wider labour support if demands are not met. No deadline date is published (TBA). Vanguard describes a period of weeks.
  • Demands: lower fuel prices, a review of public-servant pay and allowances, and a committee on the 2027 minimum wage.
  • Airports: no disruption was reported during the warning strike.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Now: no change to flights. Government offices should be back to normal on Monday.
  • If a total strike is called: the unions say it would draw in wider labour support, so it could reach beyond government offices. Treat any announced date as a day to avoid flying standby through Lagos or Abuja.
  • Paperwork: if you need a visa or permit processed by a Nigerian government office, do it soon in case offices shut again.
