October 5, 2026 — Typhoon Choi-wan strengthened to 925 hPa and is passing east of Japan’s remote Ogasawara Islands on Monday night into Tuesday. It is not forecast to make landfall on the main islands. Two more typhoons are now active farther east, and forecasters say one or both could approach Japan around the October 10–12 holiday weekend. That outlook is uncertain and is not an official warning.
The details
- Choi-wan (Typhoon No. 27): rated large and very strong by the Japan Meteorological Agency. At 3 am Monday it had a central pressure of 925 hPa and sustained winds of about 180 km/h, moving north at about 20 km/h.
- Track: east of Chichijima and Hahajima on the night of October 5–6, then northeast, well off the Sanriku coast by the morning of October 7, weakening to an extratropical low around October 8.
- Warnings: a high-wave warning is in force for Ogasawara Village, with 8-metre waves forecast October 5 and 6. Seas above 6 metres are expected along the Pacific coast from the Kanto region north.
- Ferries: the Ogasawara Maru sailed from Chichijima two days early, on October 4, and the Hahajima Maru is cancelled October 5 and 6, a local news site reported. The islands have no airport.
- Nolo (No. 28): a very strong typhoon that crossed the Date Line from the central Pacific. It is forecast near Wake Island October 6–7 and Minami-Torishima October 8, then turning north to waters east of Japan by October 10.
- Koguma (No. 29): formed Monday morning near the Marshall Islands and is forecast to be a strong typhoon near Minami-Torishima on October 9.
- Philippines: the weather agency PAGASA says no tropical cyclone is inside its area of responsibility.
What it means for airline travelers
- Flights at Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports are not threatened by Choi-wan on the current track.
- If you are flying standby to or from Tokyo between October 9 and 12, watch the forecasts for Nolo and Koguma. That is a holiday weekend in Japan, loads are already heavy, and a typhoon near the Kanto coast can cancel a day of flights.
- Avoid the Pacific coast shoreline and small-boat trips north of Tokyo through Wednesday because of high surf.
- Anyone booked to Ogasawara should confirm sailings with the ferry operator before leaving home.
