October 5, 2026 — Update to our October 4 story. The recovery planned for Monday in Catalonia did not happen. A new burst of torrential rain on Monday morning re-closed commuter rail lines that were due to reopen, including the R2 Nord line that serves Barcelona-El Prat airport, and cut the L9 Sud airport metro. The death toll is unchanged at two, with one person still missing.
What changed on Monday
- Rain: up to 90 litres per square metre fell in one hour, news agency EFE reported. A red alert for the area inland of Barcelona was lifted at 10:00, and phone alerts ran until 14:00.
- Airport: 29 to 30 more flights were cancelled at Barcelona-El Prat on Monday, on top of 385 over the weekend.
- High-speed rail: AVE service was interrupted between Barcelona’s La Sagrera and Sants stations.
- Roads: the Ronda de Dalt ring road (B-20) was closed, along with several local roads north of the city.
- Forecast: rain is expected to ease from Wednesday, October 7.

Strikes and protests
- Barcelona bus strike: dates are unchanged (October 8, 14, 15, 20, 22, 27 and 29). Local broadcaster betevé gives the stoppage windows as 9–11 am, 7–9 pm and 11 pm–1 am. The result of Monday’s mediation and the minimum-service levels are TBA.
- Housing protests: no new clashes or dates were found in the past 24 hours.
What it means for airline travelers
- Do not rely on the train or metro to reach Barcelona-El Prat on Tuesday. Check Rodalies and TMB before leaving, and budget for the Aerobus or a taxi. Road closures may slow both.
- If you are flying standby out of Barcelona, expect full flights for several days as cancelled passengers are rebooked.
- Renfe travelers on cut lines should ask about replacement buses and refunds at the station or on Renfe’s site.
- From October 8, add the bus strike windows to your planning.
