October 6, 2026 — Update to our October 5 story. Saudi Arabia’s aviation authority has confirmed attacks on two civilian airports near the Yemen border, and the Houthis now claim a missile strike on a third. Israel has separately issued a security warning tied to the October 7 anniversary.
What changed in Saudi Arabia
- Two airports confirmed hit: The General Authority of Civil Aviation said King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Airport in Jazan and Najran Airport were attacked on Monday evening, October 5. It reported three minor injuries and limited damage. No report we read says whether either airport closed or which flights were cancelled (TBA).
- Abha claim: On Tuesday, October 6, the Houthis said a ballistic missile hit Abha International Airport and disrupted air traffic. Saudi Arabia has not confirmed this.
- Other claims: The Houthis also claimed strikes on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and the Aramco refinery at Rabigh. Riyadh has not confirmed these either.
- Airline warning repeated: Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree again warned all airlines against flying in Saudi airspace. Türkiye Today reports the warning exempts Mecca and Medina.
- Fighting continues: The Saudi-led coalition says it destroyed a missile launch platform in Sanaa and a missile store in Saada.
Airlines and advisories
- No report we read shows any airline newly suspending Saudi flights or overflights because of the warning. Gulf News lists flydubai’s Abha service as cancelled.
- The State Department’s Saudi Arabia advisory is unchanged at Level 3 (last changed September 15). The UK’s advice was last updated September 20.
- Safe Airspace’s October 6 summary keeps Saudi Arabia at its Level 3 and lists a European conflict-zone bulletin valid to November 16.
- A US Mission Saudi Arabia security alert dated October 5 exists, but the embassy page could not be opened, so its content is not reported here.
Israel
- New warning: Israel’s National Security Council warned on October 6 of a higher risk of attacks on Israelis and Jews abroad around the October 7 anniversary. It tells Israelis to avoid Jordan, Qatar, Egypt including Sinai, and Somaliland, and to stay away from demonstrations.
- Crew rule unchanged: The ban on air crew holding any of 27 nationalities working or riding on Israel-bound flights stands. No new airline suspension was found.
What it means for airline travelers
- Avoid the southwest if you can. Jazan, Najran and Abha face short-notice disruption. Check flight status with the airline before leaving for the airport.
- Riyadh and Jeddah are operating, but the Houthis name Riyadh as a target. Keep a flexible plan and a confirmed way out.
- Standby risk is high. If flights are cancelled, revenue passengers are rebooked first and loads fill quickly. Carry funds for a confirmed ticket and extra hotel nights.
- Crew and travelers on layovers in the region should keep a low profile around October 7 and avoid demonstrations.
- Register with STEP (US) or Registration of Canadians Abroad, and check that your travel insurance covers a Level 3 destination.
