MUMBAI, October 7, 2026 — Update to our October 6 story. The plan to push a third of Mumbai’s international flights out of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) now has a decision timetable. India’s civil aviation secretary has set two follow-up meetings, on October 13 and October 20, to settle how and when the shift happens.

What changed

Yesterday we reported that the ministry had told the airport operator to defer its October 25 cut. Reports published since then add the timetable and more detail from the meeting.

  • The meeting: Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha chaired a session of nearly 90 minutes on Tuesday, October 6. Airlines, Adani Airports Holdings Ltd (AAHL), the Federation of Indian Airlines, IATA and the Airports Authority of India attended, according to a PTI report carried by ETV Bharat.
  • The delay: the secretary proposed postponing the shift by several weeks and asked the airlines and the operator for a full transition plan.
  • October 13: airlines and AAHL meet to work on that plan.
  • October 20: a final meeting to decide the details.
  • Navi Mumbai capacity: AAHL told the meeting that Navi Mumbai International Airport can handle up to 5 million international passengers a year.
  • Terminal 1 works: Millennium Post reports redevelopment is due to start in January 2027 and will lift Terminal 1 capacity from 15 million to 20 million passengers a year.

Key dates

Date What happens
October 13, 2026 Airlines and AAHL meet on the transition plan
October 20, 2026 Final meeting to decide the transition
October 25, 2026 Original deadline for a 33% cut in international flights (265 weekly services from Terminal 2). Now expected to slip by several weeks.
New start date for the cut TBA
January 2027 Terminal 1 redevelopment due to begin

Which airlines and routes would move to Navi Mumbai is still TBA. Airlines continue to oppose the operator’s proposal.

What it means for non-revs

  • Late-October Mumbai trips look safer than they did. With the secretary proposing a delay of several weeks, an October 25 cut now looks unlikely. Nothing is final until the October 20 meeting.
  • Do not plan November or December yet. If the cut goes ahead later, 265 weekly international services leave Terminal 2. That means fewer seats at BOM and tighter standby loads on what remains.
  • Check which airport your flight uses. If flights move, some will operate from Navi Mumbai International Airport instead of BOM. They are separate airports, so a same-day connection between them needs a long buffer.
  • Re-verify listings after October 20. That is the first date a firm answer is expected. We will update then.
