BRUSSELS, October 7, 2026 — Brussels Airport (BRU) expects about 140 arriving and departing flights to be cancelled on Friday, October 9, when staff at ground handler Alyzia join a national union protest. Brussels Airlines, Alyzia’s biggest customer at the airport, is cutting roughly 40% of its Friday schedule.
What is happening
- Date: Friday, October 9, 2026. The cancellations announced so far cover that day only. Knock-on effects for Saturday, October 10: TBA.
- Who is walking out: staff at Alyzia, which handles baggage, ramp work, de-icing, aircraft cleaning and cargo for about 20 airlines at BRU.
- Why: Belgium’s socialist union ABVV-FGTB and Christian union ACV-CSC are holding national protests against federal government plans on wage indexation, VAT and working time.
- Scale: the airport says only “approximately half of the flights” Alyzia handles will operate. Reuters, as carried by Global Banking & Finance Review, put the total at about 140 cancellations.
- Brussels Airlines: about four in ten Friday flights are cancelled. The airline is contacting affected passengers with rebooking or refund options.
Which airlines are affected
| Status on October 9 | Airlines named in reports |
|---|---|
| Handled by Alyzia — cancellations expected | Brussels Airlines, Air China, Air Senegal, Air Arabia Maroc, AJet (Aerocorner). A UK report carried by AOL also names ITA Airways and United Airlines as affected. |
| Handled by Aviapartner — expected to run normally | British Airways, Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Air Transat, Ryanair, TUI (Aerocorner). The AOL report also lists easyJet and Wizz Air as unaffected. |
The same UK report lists Brussels Airlines flights on its London Heathrow, Manchester, Paris, Budapest, Madrid and Chicago routes among those cancelled. The airport has not published a full airline-by-airline list, so confirm with your own carrier.
Getting to the airport
A union demonstration is planned in central Brussels on Friday, and Strike Tracker expects disruption on the STIB, De Lijn and TEC local transport networks that day. The UK report also flags a public transport strike on Monday, October 12, that could affect access to the airport but not flights.
What it means for non-revs
- Avoid standby through BRU on Friday if you can. With about 40% of Brussels Airlines flights removed, displaced revenue passengers will be rebooked onto the flights that still operate. Expect very full loads Friday and likely into the weekend.
- Thursday and Saturday will tighten too. Brussels Airlines is offering rebooking, so passengers will move to the days on either side of the strike.
- Look at Aviapartner-handled carriers. British Airways, Aer Lingus, Air Canada and Air Transat are reported to be unaffected, which makes them the safer ZED or interline options into and out of Brussels that day.
- United flyers: one report names United among the affected airlines. Check the status of the Brussels flights with the airline before listing.
- Carry on. The walkout is by baggage and ramp staff. Even on flights that operate, checked bags are the weak point.
- Consider alternates. Routing through another European gateway such as Amsterdam or Paris avoids the strike. If you do travel to or from BRU on Friday, allow extra time because Brussels local transport is also expected to be disrupted.
- Watch late November. Aerocorner reports the FGTB has raised the possibility of a general strike in the week of November 23. No strike has been called for that week; dates TBA.
