October 8, 2026 — An opposition protest outside Albania’s parliament in Tirana turned tense on Thursday morning, with local media reporting clashes with police and the use of tear-gas spray. The US Embassy in Tirana issued a demonstration alert for the day. The US advisory level for Albania has not changed.

What happened

  • When and where: Thursday, October 8, from 10 am local time, outside parliament in central Tirana.
  • Who: The opposition Democratic Party called it as a national protest.
  • Why: Parliament was voting on a bill to cut the number of municipalities from 61 to 46.
  • Clashes: By about 11 am, the news site Arbresh.info reported confrontations with police and tear-gas spray.
  • Not yet known: Injuries, arrests, road closures, the result of the vote and any further protest dates (all TBA).
