October 8, 2026 — Update to our October 7 story. Typhoon No. 29, Koguma, did not strengthen on Thursday, and the latest forecast table lowers its expected peak. It is still due near the Ogasawara Islands on Monday, October 12. Some Izu Islands ferries resumed. The mainland is not threatened. In Tokyo, the US Embassy issued a demonstration alert after protests outside its gates.
The typhoon
- Now: Koguma was still at 990 hPa near Wake Island at 3 pm Japan time on Thursday.
- Peak: The Japan Weather Association’s afternoon table shows 960 hPa, rated strong, on October 10–11. Yesterday’s forecast was 950 hPa, very strong. Morning articles still used the higher rating; the table is newer.
- Ogasawara: Near the islands at 3 pm on Monday, October 12, then passing east of Japan on October 13. The forecast circle is wide, so the closest approach is uncertain.
- Other storms: Choi-wan is no longer a typhoon. Nolo is turning away from land.
- Elsewhere: No tropical cyclone threatens Okinawa, Guam, the Philippines or Taiwan.
Ferries
- Izu Islands, October 8: High-speed ferries to Oshima resumed. Those to Toshima, Niijima and Shikinejima were cancelled or not listed.
- Ogasawara: The Hahajima ferry is cancelled on October 8 and 9. The Tokyo–Chichijima ship has posted no notice (TBA).
- October 9: Not yet announced (TBA).
Tokyo demonstration alert
- US Embassy: A demonstration alert dated October 7 is listed on the embassy’s site. We could not open the page.
- Background: A Japanese labour news site reports a rally outside the embassy on the evening of October 6 over the arrest of a US service member in Okinawa. Organizers counted about 150 people. A further protest was called for Thursday evening at the Foreign Ministry. No violence was reported.
- Advisory: Japan remains at Level 1.
What it means for airline travelers
- Mainland travel is normal. No typhoon is forecast to reach Tokyo, Honshu or Okinawa.
- Do not start an Ogasawara trip now. Sailings are infrequent, and a cancellation around the holiday weekend can strand you for days.
- Izu Islands: Check Tokai Kisen’s status page each morning.
- In Tokyo: Avoid the streets around the US Embassy and the Foreign Ministry during evening protests. No effect on transport is reported.
