October 10, 2026 — Norwegian Cruise Line will put its next flagship, Norwegian Aura, into service on May 2, 2027, 19 days sooner than planned. The line expects shipyard Fincantieri to hand the ship over early and has added two Mediterranean cruises ahead of the original May 21 maiden voyage.

The two new sailings

Departs Length Route Ports of call
May 2, 2027 10 nights Trieste to Athens (Piraeus) Dubrovnik, Split, Bar, Corfu, Santorini, Mykonos
May 12, 2027 9 nights Athens (Piraeus) to Trieste Rhodes, Mykonos, Santorini, Corfu, Bar, Split, Zadar

Both cruises are on sale now. Fares were not published in the reports. The exact delivery date is TBA; Norwegian describes it only as an expected early delivery. Cruise Hive notes the announcement comes about six weeks after a fire aboard the ship during construction.

What stays the same

  • May 21, 2027: the seven-night Trieste to Barcelona cruise still sails, calling at Valletta, Salerno and Civitavecchia. It is no longer the maiden voyage. Norwegian has not said whether guests on it may switch to the earlier dates.
  • Transatlantic: a 13-day crossing from Barcelona to Miami follows.
  • June to October 2027: seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruises from Miami to Puerto Plata, St. Thomas, Tortola and Great Stirrup Cay.
  • Winter 2027–28: seven-night Western Caribbean cruises to Roatán, Costa Maya, Cozumel and Harvest Caye.

Norwegian Aura is a 170,000-gross-ton ship for about 3,840 guests, the largest in the fleet. President Marc Kazlauskas said the early handover lets the line “welcome guests aboard sooner than expected.”

Norwegian Encore will be the last cruise ship of 2026 at Vancouver’s Canada Place. It arrives Monday, October 12 and is due to leave at 2:30 a.m. on October 13. The port counted 358 ship calls and 1.4 million passenger visits this season, up 19 and 18 percent on 2025, with a record 290,000-plus passengers in July.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Both new cruises are one-way. You fly into one city and home from another: Trieste (TRS) and Athens (ATH). Venice (VCE) is the larger airport within reach of Trieste. Price or list both legs before you book.
  • Trieste has limited long-haul service. Standby travelers should plan on connecting through a European hub and arriving at least a day early, two if loads look tight.
  • Early May is ahead of the peak summer rush, which usually helps standby loads to Europe.
  • New-ship debut dates can still move. Keep flights and hotels flexible until the ship is delivered.
  • Booked on the May 21 sailing because it was the maiden voyage? Ask Norwegian or your agent about moving; no policy has been announced.
  • No interline or travel-industry rates were announced for the new sailings.
  • Vancouver (YVR) cruise departures are finished for 2026 after October 12.
