October 11, 2026 — Costa Cruises’ Costa Serena made its first call at Yokohama on October 7 as it winds up more than a decade in Asia. The ship leaves Tokyo on October 18 on a 65-night world cruise to Buenos Aires, then spends the winter in South America.

Costa Serena’s move out of Asia

Date What happens
October 7, 2026 Maiden call at Yokohama. The cruise goes on to Kobe, Nagasaki, Busan and Kanazawa and ends in Hakodate
October 18, 2026 65-night world cruise leaves Tokyo for Buenos Aires by way of Australia, the South Pacific and South America
November 2026 to April 2027 Winter season in South America. Homeports and itineraries: TBA
Late April 2027 Moves to Europe for Mediterranean cruises. Homeport: TBA

Yokohama’s port bureau welcomed Captain Orazio D’Aita and his crew with a plaque exchange on board. The 2007-built ship stays in the Costa fleet; the report describes a redeployment, not a sale. Costa Cruises is part of Carnival Corporation.

What it means for airline travelers

  • The world cruise is one-way. You fly into Tokyo, Haneda (HND) or Narita (NRT), and home from Buenos Aires (EZE). Both are long-haul standby trips, so arrive at least two days early.
  • Sixty-five nights from October 18 puts the arrival in Buenos Aires just before Christmas, a hard week for a standby seat north. Confirm the end date with Costa and consider a confirmed ticket home.
  • Costa Serena’s cruises from Japan end with this move. If you used the ship for short Asia cruises, ask Costa what replaces it; nothing was announced.
  • South America sailings this winter need flights to Brazil or Argentina. Check entry rules for your passport before listing.
  • Fares and travel-industry rates: TBA.
