PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico, October 11, 2026 — Update to our October 10 story. Puerto Vallarta’s Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) is closed for Hurricane Simon. Operations stopped at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 10. The published reopening target is 8 a.m. Monday, October 12, weather permitting.
What changed since Saturday
- The airport closed. On Saturday morning PVR was still open and no closure had been announced. A notice to pilots now lists the airport closed from 6 p.m. local time Saturday to 8 a.m. Monday, Out and About PV reports.
- All Sunday flights are cancelled. Airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) said every operation after 5 p.m. Saturday and all of Sunday’s schedule is cancelled, according to an EFE report carried by El Comercio.
- Reopening is conditional. GAP says the restart depends on the weather and on safety inspections. El Cronista carried an earlier GAP estimate of about midday Sunday; later reports and the pilot notice give Monday at 8 a.m. Confirmed reopening: TBA.
- Stay away from the terminal. GAP asked passengers not to come to the airport and to remain in hotels or official shelters.
- The storm: at 6 a.m. CST Sunday the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) put Simon about 110 miles south-southeast of Cabo Corrientes. It was a Category 4 hurricane with 150 mph winds, moving north-northwest at 6 mph. It had not made landfall.
- Forecast: the NHC expects the center near or just inland of west-central Mexico later Sunday and very close to the coast on Monday. Rain totals of 10 to 20 inches, locally 30, are forecast through Monday.
- In town: Puerto Vallarta’s water supply was shut off at 6 p.m. Saturday and public transport is suspended, Vallarta Daily and EFE report.
Airline waivers
| Airline | Original travel dates | Rebook window |
|---|---|---|
| Alaska (PVR, ZLO, MZT) | October 8–11 | New travel October 8–14 |
| American (PVR) | October 9–11 | New travel October 9–14; change by October 11 |
Neither waiver covered Monday, October 12, when we checked on Sunday. Extensions: TBA.
What it means for non-revs
- No flights to stand by for until Monday at the earliest. Do not list for PVR on Sunday.
- Monday is not a safe bet. The NHC track keeps Simon close to the coast into Monday, and the 8 a.m. reopening depends on inspections. Treat Monday listings as provisional.
- Expect full flights when service returns. At least a day and a half of cancelled departures will be rebooked onto the first flights out. Standby chances out of PVR will be poor for several days.
- If you are in Puerto Vallarta now, stay where you are. GAP does not want passengers at the terminal, and local transport is not running.
- Alternates are limited. Manzanillo is also closed. Guadalajara (GDL) is the nearest large airport, but check road conditions after the storm before planning a drive.
- Do not check a bag on the first flights after reopening if you can avoid it. Aircraft and crews will be out of position.
