MANZANILLO, Mexico, October 11, 2026 — Update to our October 10 story. Manzanillo’s Playa de Oro International Airport (ZLO) closed at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, and airlines have cancelled every commercial flight scheduled for Sunday, October 11. Hurricane Simon was about 60 miles offshore on Sunday morning.

What changed since Saturday

  • The airport itself closed. On Saturday we reported that airlines had cancelled the day’s commercial flights. Airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) then suspended all operations from 6 p.m. Saturday.
  • Sunday’s commercial flights are cancelled. Airlines scrubbed all of Sunday’s commercial schedule, according to an EFE report carried by El Comercio.
  • Partial restart possible: GAP set 8 a.m. Sunday as the provisional reopening time. EFE reports that general aviation and Mexican Navy flights could resume then if conditions allow. Whether that happened: TBA.
  • Commercial restart: depends on weather and safety inspections. Date: TBA.
  • The storm: at 6 a.m. CST Sunday the National Hurricane Center put Simon about 60 miles west of Manzanillo with 150 mph winds, moving north-northwest at 6 mph. Hurricane-force winds reach 25 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds reach 90 miles.
  • Rain: 10 to 20 inches, locally 30, is forecast for Colima, Jalisco and Michoacán through Monday.
  • Port: navigation at the port of Manzanillo is fully restricted.

Airline waivers

Alaska’s Simon waiver covers Manzanillo for tickets with original travel dates of October 8–11. New travel must be completed by October 14.

What it means for non-revs

  • Nothing to list for on Sunday. Commercial service has now been cancelled for two straight days.
  • ZLO has few flights on a normal day, so a two-day backlog will take time to clear. Expect little or no standby space on the first flights after service resumes.
  • Puerto Vallarta is not an alternate. PVR is closed until at least Monday morning.
  • If you are in Manzanillo, stay in your hotel or a shelter. GAP has asked passengers not to go to the airport.
  • Wait for an airline confirmation before travelling to the airport. A reopened runway does not mean your flight is operating.
