October 12, 2026 — Greek seafarers’ unions have called a 24-hour strike on all ships at the Attica ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio on Friday, October 30, which would halt ferries to many islands from the Athens area that day.
The strike
- Unions: PEMEN, with PENEN and ENEDEP. PEMEN is urging the main seafarers’ federation, PNO, to make it a nationwide strike; no decision had been reported.
- Date: Friday, October 30. Start and end times TBA.
- Ports: Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio (all ship categories). Action is also planned at Patras and Igoumenitsa.
- Why: The strike is part of an international anti-war day of action by port and dock workers on October 30.
What it means for airline travelers
- If you are island-hopping around October 30, avoid booking a ferry from Piraeus, Rafina or Lavrio that day. Move the crossing a day earlier, or fly to the island if there is service.
- Already booked? Watch for confirmation from your ferry company and ask about changes or refunds if sailings are cancelled.
- If your trip uses a ferry from Patras or Igoumenitsa that day, check those sailings too.
