October 13, 2026 — Puerto Vallarta’s airport reopened to commercial flights on Tuesday after a three-day closure, and Manzanillo reopened on Monday. Hurricane Simon has weakened to Category 1 but is crawling slowly offshore, with a hurricane watch for the Sinaloa coast and heavy rain expected there by Thursday.
Where the storm is
- Position (5 a.m. MST Tuesday): About 95 miles west of Cabo Corrientes and 200 miles south-southwest of Mazatlán, with top winds of 90 mph. It is a very small storm, with hurricane-force winds only about 10 miles from its centre.
- Movement: West-northwest at about 3 mph. The National Hurricane Center expects a slow northwest drift and then a turn north over the next few days, with Simon staying a hurricane through midweek. Rio Times notes the forecast is low confidence.
- Warnings and watches: Hurricane warning for Las Islas Marías; hurricane watch north of Escuinapa to Bahía Tempehuaya (Sinaloa); tropical storm watch from Cabo Corrientes to Escuinapa, which includes Puerto Vallarta.
- Rain: 5 to 10 inches across coastal west-central Mexico, with isolated totals near 15 inches in Sinaloa by Thursday, October 15. The NHC warns of life-threatening flooding and mudslides.
Airports
| Airport | Status |
|---|---|

Delta’s Hurricane Simon waiver covers Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara for travel scheduled October 10–12 on tickets issued by October 11, with rebooked travel by October 15. Check other airlines’ travel alerts. Beaches in Puerto Vallarta remain dangerous, with red flags and waves of 2 to 3 metres.
What it means for airline travelers
- Puerto Vallarta is open again, but the first days after a closure bring full flights as stranded passengers rebook. Expect standby to be tough through the week and have a backup date.
- Heading to Mazatlán or elsewhere in Sinaloa this week? Watch the NHC advisories and your airline’s alerts before you go; the track is uncertain.
- Stay out of the water on the Pacific coast while red flags are up.
- Register with STEP (US) or Registration of Canadians Abroad, and check whether your travel insurance covers storm delays.
