October 14, 2026 — Unions, teachers and students are marching in Bogotá and other Colombian cities today in a national day of protest against the government, and organizers say a larger national strike will follow in November. The US Embassy in Bogotá has issued a demonstration alert.
Today’s protests
- Who: The CUT labor federation called the national mobilization, backed by the teachers’ union Fecode and other union and social groups. Bogotá’s city government also lists the CTC and CGT federations among the organizers. Grievances include wages, pensions and labor rights.
- Bogotá: Marches leave Parque Nacional (Carrera 7 at Calle 26) at 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. for Plaza de Bolívar. City officials expect the heaviest disruption on Carrera 7, Carrera 10 and Calle 26, plus roads in Usme, and say TransMilenio trunk and zonal routes may be affected.
- So far: As of early afternoon, Infobae’s live coverage reported TransMilenio stations open with some delays, and a top-flight football match at El Campín stadium was postponed for security reasons. On Tuesday evening, masked groups blocked Avenida Circunvalar near the Universidad Distrital and clashed with police, forcing TransMilenio feeder routes onto detours (El Colombiano).
- Other cities: Marches are also called in Medellín (10 a.m.), Barranquilla (3:30 p.m.), Cali, Ibagué, Armenia and Bucaramanga.
What comes next
Organizers describe today as a warm-up for a broader national strike in November. November 11 and November 20 have been floated; the final date is TBA.
US Embassy alert
The US Embassy in Bogotá warned of traffic disruption, road closures and public-transport delays in central Bogotá, especially La Candelaria, Santa Fe, Teusaquillo and Usme. It advises Americans to avoid the protests, keep a low profile and allow extra travel time.
What it means for airline travelers
- If you are flying out of Bogotá today, leave for El Dorado early. Calle 26, the main road to the airport, is one of the corridors city officials flagged.
- Stay away from Parque Nacional, Plaza de Bolívar and the march routes, and avoid TransMilenio stations near them.
- Watch for the November national strike date. A nationwide strike can bring road blockades between cities; if you are planning standby travel to Colombia in November, give yourself spare days.
- Register with STEP (US) or Registration of Canadians Abroad to receive embassy alerts.
