October 14, 2026 — Hurricane Simon has strengthened again but is drifting slowly off Mexico’s Pacific coast, and the hurricane watch for the Sinaloa coast has been dropped. Behind it, Tropical Storm Trudy has formed south of Acapulco and is forecast to become a major hurricane by Friday.
Hurricane Simon
- Latest (5 a.m. MST Wednesday, NHC): Top winds of 105 mph, centered near 19.8°N, 108.1°W, moving west-southwest at about 3 mph. Overnight, the NHC put winds at 110 mph and said Simon could briefly become a major hurricane again.
- Watches: As of the NHC’s 8 p.m. MST Tuesday advisory, the only watch in force is a hurricane watch for Las Islas Marías. The Sinaloa coast watch reported yesterday is no longer listed.
- Forecast: Slow, erratic movement for a couple of days, then a turn north or north-northwest late this week, with gradual weakening. The NHC’s rain forecast is now 1 to 2 inches, locally 3, over parts of Baja California Sur, Nayarit and Sinaloa, much lower than earlier forecasts.
- Los Cabos: The Cabo Sun reports that the forecast cone now points toward the southern tip of Baja California Sur around Friday night, with Simon expected to be a tropical storm by then. It warns of possible crosswind delays at Los Cabos airport, closure of the port to small boats, and cancelled tours.
- Surf: Swells will bring life-threatening surf and rip currents to west-central Mexico and Baja California Sur for the next few days.
Tropical Storm Trudy
- Latest (3 a.m. CST Wednesday, NHC): Winds of 50 mph, near 11.1°N, 99.0°W, moving west-northwest at 10 mph. On Tuesday evening it was about 440 miles south-southeast of Acapulco.
- Forecast: Rapid strengthening, becoming a hurricane by Wednesday night and a major hurricane by Friday. The NHC said watches would likely be needed for parts of southwestern and west-central Mexico on Wednesday; none were in force at the latest advisory (TBA).
- Swells are expected to reach southern Mexico’s coast late this week.
Canada’s advisory
Travel.gc.ca (updated October 13, 3:50 p.m. ET) raised its risk level for the west-central coast: avoid non-essential travel from north of Escuinapa to Bahía Tempehuaya, including the Islas Marías. The page does not yet mention Trudy.
What it means for airline travelers
- Mazatlán’s immediate threat has eased, but the storm is still close and slow-moving; check the NHC before you go.
- Heading to Los Cabos for the weekend? Watch your airline’s alerts from Thursday and have a backup date. Standby seats will be scarce if Friday flights are cancelled and passengers are rebooked.
- Trudy could threaten resort areas such as Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta late this week or the weekend. Its track is uncertain, so check NHC advisories daily.
- Stay out of the ocean on the Pacific coast while dangerous surf warnings are up.
- Register with STEP (US) or Registration of Canadians Abroad, and check whether your travel insurance covers storm delays.
