October 16, 2026 — United says Starlink Wi-Fi now flies on about half of its daily departures, it has extended its status match for Delta and American flyers to October 22, and a Newark-bound 767 turned back to London on Thursday after a technical issue.
Starlink on more than 635 aircraft
United says Starlink is now active on more than 635 aircraft, which works out to about half of its daily departures, or more than 2,500 flights a day. It says more than 250,000 customers a day now fly on a Starlink-equipped aircraft. That is up about 75 aircraft from the more than 560 United reported on September 18.
- Installs are running at about 20 aircraft a week.
- United plans to finish the rollout by the end of 2027.
- Wi-Fi is free for MileagePlus members.
Status match extended
United’s status match lets eligible Delta SkyMiles and American AAdvantage members earn United Premier status that runs through January 2028. The deadline to apply has been extended to October 22, 2026. United says applications are up 275% compared with before the campaign started.
UA941 returns to Heathrow
On October 15, United flight UA941 from London Heathrow to Newark, a Boeing 767-300ER registered N686UA, returned to Heathrow about two hours after takeoff. The crew reported a technical issue and declared a general emergency at about 32,000 feet over Manchester. The aircraft landed at about 6 p.m. local time. United has not published the cause (TBA). The report does not mention any injuries.
Coming up
United will report its third-quarter 2026 results on October 20, after the U.S. market closes.
What it means for non-revs
- The status match brings Delta and American frequent flyers onto United. Even a small increase in Premier members puts more names ahead of you on upgrade and standby lists, so it is worth watching loads on competitive routes after October 22.
- Starlink is now on about half of United’s flights. If you’re a MileagePlus member, sign in to get free Wi-Fi, which is useful for checking loads and lists on board.
- A diversion like UA941 usually means rebooked passengers fill seats on the following days’ flights on that route. If you plan to travel standby London–Newark in the next day or two, expect fuller flights.
- Watch the October 20 earnings call for any capacity or schedule changes for winter.
