October 16, 2026 — Update: a new storm, Hurricane Trudy, now threatens Virgin Voyages’ Brilliant Lady sailing from Los Angeles on Saturday, October 17. If the ship is rerouted, it will be the fourth Mexican Riviera cruise in a row disrupted by tropical weather.
The sailing
| Date | Planned call |
|---|---|
| October 17, 2026 | Depart Los Angeles |
| October 19, 2026 | Cabo San Lucas |
| October 20, 2026 | Mazatlán |
| October 21, 2026 | Puerto Vallarta |
| October 24, 2026 | Return to Los Angeles |
In an October 14 notice, Virgin told guests no decision had been made but that a backup route was ready: “We’ve prepared an alternative itinerary in case we need to reroute.” The line promised an update on October 15. As of Rus Tourism News’ report on the morning of October 16 (European time), no reroute or cancellation had been confirmed and the replacement ports had not been named. Guests were told to pack extra layers and a light jacket because the alternative stops could be cooler.
The storm
Trudy formed south of Acapulco on October 13 and became a Category 1 hurricane early on October 15, according to National Hurricane Center figures cited by Cruise Hive. By early October 16 it had reached Category 3 with sustained winds of 120 mph, Rus Tourism News reported, and forecasters expected large swells along Mexico’s Pacific coast. The ship’s planned course would bring it near Baja California late on October 18 and into the next morning, close to Trudy’s projected track.
Three earlier disruptions
- September 26: Hurricane Polo — all three Mexican ports replaced.
- October 3: Swells from Hurricane Rachel — Ensenada replaced Cabo San Lucas.
- October 10: Storms Simon and Rachel — Santa Barbara, San Diego and Ensenada replaced Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta.
Brilliant Lady’s next departures from Los Angeles — a five-night Baja Halloween cruise on October 24 and a 17-night repositioning voyage to Miami on October 29 — had no confirmed changes.
What it means for airline travelers
- The ship is still expected to sail from Los Angeles. No cancellation has been announced, so keep your flight into LAX; arriving the day before is the safer plan, especially on standby.
- Check Virgin’s update before you fly. If the ship heads to cooler ports, pack layers and expect Mexico-only plans (private tours, beach days) to fall through.
- Compensation: no refund or credit terms for this sailing were reported. Ask Virgin or your travel agent directly about your options.
- Booked on the October 29 repositioning? It ends in Miami, so you will need a one-way flight home from MIA. Watch for updates as the season’s storms continue.
- No change to interline or travel-industry cruise rates was mentioned.
