EDINBURGH, Scotland, October 18, 2026 — A short outage in Edinburgh Airport’s (EDI) departure baggage system caused long check-in queues early on Sunday, October 18. The airport says the fault was fixed at 4:50 a.m. and operations are back to normal.
What happened
- The fault: A problem with the departure baggage belt inside the terminal backed up check-in early Sunday. Queues wrapped around the entrance to the check-in hall, and one eyewitness said passengers near check-in were barely moving.
- Airline warning: Jet2 warned customers of possible check-in congestion and told them to allow extra time for passport control.
- Fixed: The airport said the brief outage was resolved at 4:50 a.m. and that the system is “fully operational.” The Edinburgh Evening News reported the queues had since cleared, with no current delays in the terminal.
- Bags left behind: The airport did not say whether any checked bags missed their flights. TBA.
What it means for non-revs
- No lasting impact reported. The airport says things are running normally, so there is no reason to change Sunday plans.
- Early departures are the exposure. The fault hit the first wave of the morning. If you are on an early flight out of EDI, arrive with extra time in case check-in backs up again, and watch for congestion warnings from your airline.
- Carry on when you can. Baggage-system faults are the main way a bag gets left behind; a carry-on keeps you free to take the first open seat on any flight.
