October 21, 2026 — A leaked internal Frontier Airlines memo says the carrier will start retrofitting its aircraft with a true first class cabin in late October, aims to launch first class on March 5, 2027, and will stop handing out free upgrades to elites on bookings made from January 1, 2027 unless they buy a bundle.
What the memo says
View from the Wing published details of the memo on October 21. Frontier has not issued a public announcement on these points, so treat them as reported, not confirmed.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Retrofits begin | Late October 2026 |
| First class launch | March 5, 2027 |
| Fleet conversion complete | Expected by March 2027 |
| Cabin | Two rows in a 2-2 layout, eight seats, no middle seats; Geven Comoda seats that are “pre-reclined” rather than fully reclining |
| Food and drink | Not included |
| In-seat power and Starlink Wi-Fi | Rolling out during 2027 (type of power and which seats: TBA) |
| Free elite upgrades | For bookings made from January 1, 2027, complimentary UpFront Plus and first class upgrades require a bundle purchase |
Until the conversion is finished, a customer who books UpFront Plus could get either a regular coach seat with the middle seat left empty or one of the new, larger first class seats, depending on which aircraft operates the flight. The memo also mentions “refreshed interiors,” but no details have been released (TBA).
Frontier announced its Starlink plans on July 14, with the first equipped aircraft expected in early 2027.
What it means for non-revs
- Fewer seats per row up front: replacing the front rows with a 2-2 first class cabin means those rows hold fewer people. Whether total seats per aircraft change has not been published (TBA), so check loads carefully on Frontier interline or ZED trips this winter.
- Retrofits starting in late October can mean aircraft swaps and short-notice seat-map changes. If you are relying on a specific Frontier flight, have a backup.
- Elites losing free upgrades from January 1, 2027 bookings could leave more first class seats open on some flights. Whether pass riders can ever be seated in them depends on Frontier’s own staff travel rules, which have not been reported as changing.
- For airline people tracking the low-cost sector, this is another sign that ultra-low-cost carriers are chasing premium revenue.
