October 21, 2026 — United Airlines took in a record US$17.9 billion in the third quarter, but a jump of more than 60% in its fuel bill squeezed profits, and the airline’s fourth-quarter earnings forecast came in below Wall Street expectations. The results landed the same week United opened a new Terminal B concourse at its Houston hub.
The third-quarter numbers
United released its results after the market closed on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Revenue rose 17.4% from a year earlier, and the airline says it carried a record 49.5 million passengers in the quarter. July alone was the busiest month in United’s history, with 18.4 million customers.
| Measure (Q3 2026) | Result |
|---|---|
| Operating revenue | US$17.88 billion (up 17.4%) |
| Net income (reported) | US$1.03 billion |
| Earnings per share | US$3.14 reported; US$2.54 adjusted |
| Fuel expense | US$4.84 billion (up 61.6%); average US$3.90 per gallon |
| Capacity / traffic | Capacity up 1.3%; traffic up 0.7% |
| Load factor | 83.9% (down 0.5 points) |
| Profit-sharing expense | US$146 million (down from US$228 million a year earlier) |
| Headcount (September 30) | About 117,900 (up 5.4%) |
Adjusted earnings fell from a year ago and came in slightly below analyst forecasts, as higher fuel prices outweighed the revenue gains.
Fourth-quarter outlook
United expects fourth-quarter revenue to grow more than 20% year over year. But it guided to adjusted earnings of just US$0.50 to US$1.50 per share, assuming jet fuel averages about US$4.80 a gallon, up from US$3.90 in the third quarter. That forecast is below analyst expectations. In July United had guided to US$9 to US$11 per share for the full year; a revised full-year range was not given in the reports we reviewed (TBA). No new capacity cuts were reported with the results.
Houston concourse opens
United also opened a new three-level Terminal B concourse at Houston George Bush Intercontinental. The United Club there seats about 800 people, and the airline calls it the largest airline club in the Americas.
Other items from the release
- Fleet: 1,575 aircraft at quarter-end, up 6.0%.
- Starlink Wi-Fi: installed on more than 640 aircraft and available on about half of flights, with fleet-wide availability targeted by the end of 2027.
- Network: ten new international destinations planned for summer 2027, subject to government approval.
- Training: the expansion of the Denver Flight Training Center is complete.
- Finance: the revolving credit facility grew to US$5 billion from US$3 billion.
CEO Scott Kirby said United is “winning new long-term, brand-loyal United customers.”
What it means for non-revs
- United’s load factor dipped half a point to 83.9% in the third quarter. That is still high, so expect a typical-to-tight standby picture rather than a noticeably easier one.
- With fourth-quarter revenue expected to grow more than 20%, United is pointing to strong holiday demand. Plan Thanksgiving and Christmas trips around the quietest days and check loads early.
- No new capacity cuts were announced, so there is no sign yet of fewer seats this winter. Watch for any schedule trims if fuel stays near the US$4.80 level United is forecasting.
- Profit-sharing expense was lower than a year ago, which matters to United employees watching next year’s payout.
- Connecting through Houston? The new Terminal B concourse and the big new United Club change the walk and the waiting areas, so allow extra time on your first trip through.
