October 25, 2026 — Emirates is taking the Airbus A380 off three routes for the winter season that starts today: Jeddah, Washington Dulles and Medina. The double-decker is scheduled to return on March 28, 2027.
What happened
Aviation A2Z, citing OAG schedule data, reports that 18 routes worldwide lose A380 service this winter. Three of those changes are Emirates routes.
| Route | Winter 2026/27 | A380 back |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai–Jeddah (3x daily) | All flights move to the Boeing 777-300ER | March 28, 2027 |
| Dubai–Washington Dulles (EK231/232, daily) | Stays on the 777-300ER | March 28, 2027 (planned 489-seat layout) |
| Dubai–Medina | No A380 trips scheduled | TBA |
The details
Jeddah loses the most. The switch cuts about 102,000 round-trip seats this winter, or 22%. First class seats drop 63%, business 48% and economy 16%. The route continues with the same number of flights. Emirates has not given a reason, and the change was announced only weeks before it starts.
Washington Dulles has seen the A380 only on and off this year. Flightradar24 data cited in the report shows no A380 from March to July, a brief return in August, and none since. The report links the interruption to the ongoing war in Iran, and says the A380’s return has been pushed back several times.
Medina only ever had occasional A380 trips. There were three last winter, mostly for large Umrah groups. Emirates, flydubai and Saudia together are expected to offer up to five daily Dubai–Medina flights this winter.
What it means for non-revs
- Dubai–Jeddah gets much tighter, especially up front. With 63% fewer first-class seats and 48% fewer business seats, premium-cabin standby on this route will be hard this winter.
- Dulles stays on the smaller 777. There are no extra A380 seats to absorb a full flight. Check loads early, especially around U.S. holidays.
- Medina: nothing really changes. flydubai and Saudia also fly the route if Emirates is full.
- Enthusiasts: If you want to fly the A380 to Dulles or Jeddah, wait until after March 28, 2027.
