October 25, 2026 — MSC Cruises kept MSC Virtuosa tied up in Southampton for an extra night after Storm Austen made the English Channel unsafe, and planned strikes in France have cost the 7-night sailing a second port. Separately, MSC Armonia has been added to the line’s Mediterranean lineup for winter 2027-28.

MSC Virtuosa: late departure and two lost ports

MSC Virtuosa (MSC Cruises, part of MSC Group) was due to leave Southampton at 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2026, on a 7-night roundtrip. Instead the ship stayed overnight and is now scheduled to sail at 7 p.m. on Sunday, October 25. Storm Austen is bringing rough weather to the Channel and the Bay of Biscay, and strike action is affecting parts of France. The ship had already returned to Southampton early, on the evening of Thursday, October 22, to shelter ahead of the storm.

Date Original plan Revised plan Reason
Mon, Oct 26 La Rochelle Sea day Unsafe sea conditions for entering port
Tue, Oct 27 Bilbao Bilbao (unchanged) —
Wed, Oct 28 A Coruña A Coruña (unchanged) —
Thu, Oct 29 Sea day Vigo, 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Port added
Fri, Oct 30 Le Havre Sea day Planned French strikes expected to close the port
Sat, Oct 31 Southampton (disembark) Southampton (unchanged) —

Pre-paid MSC shore excursions for La Rochelle and Le Havre are being cancelled and refunded to guests’ onboard accounts. Vigo tours can be booked in the MSC for Me app. The ship’s notice warns that motion may still be felt, and asks guests to stay off outer decks and balconies, use handrails, and expect pools and outdoor activities to close at times. Other ships reporting Storm Austen changes this week include MSC Preziosa, P&O Cruises’ Arvia and Iona, and Ambassador’s Ambition.

MSC Armonia moves to the Mediterranean for winter 2027-28

The 2,000-passenger MSC Armonia (built 2001) becomes MSC’s ninth ship in the Mediterranean for winter 2027-28, alongside MSC World Europa, MSC Euribia and six others.

  • From December 2027 (exact date TBA): 13-night Eastern Mediterranean roundtrips from Genoa and other ports, with extended calls at Alexandria and Port Said plus stops in Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Malta.
  • From late January 2028 (exact date TBA): 10- and 11-night Western Mediterranean and Atlantic cruises from Genoa, with other embarkation ports, calling at Tangier, Casablanca and Alicante.
  • Mid-March 2028: these itineraries end and the ship returns to its previously published Eastern Mediterranean schedule.

The ship had at one point been planned for South Africa and later for South America in 2027-28; MSC Meraviglia took the South America slot in August after MSC cancelled its Middle East and Arabian Gulf winter season.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Booked on MSC Virtuosa this week? Your return to Southampton on October 31 is unchanged, so flights home from London Heathrow, Gatwick or Southampton Airport don’t need to move. Check the MSC for Me app for the Vigo tours and confirm the La Rochelle and Le Havre refunds are on your onboard account.
  • Storm season in the Channel: UK sailings are being held in port or cut short this week. If you are flying standby into London to board a ship, arrive at least a day early, because weather can disrupt flights and the drive or train to Southampton as well.
  • French strikes: the strikes that closed Le Havre could affect other French ports and airports. Keep a backup route home that doesn’t connect through France.
  • Thinking about MSC Armonia in 2027-28? Genoa is the main embarkation port; Genoa’s own airport is small, so compare connections via Milan or Nice and plan to arrive the day before. Exact sailing dates are TBA.
  • Neither report mentions any change to travel-industry or interline rates.
