Update — flights are included in Friday’s general strike. Our Oct. 26 report covered trains and city transport and listed airport details as TBA.
October 27, 2026 — Update: Friday’s 24-hour general strike in Italy also covers air transport for the whole day on October 30, according to the government’s strike register as reported by AeroCorner. Flights are protected only in two windows, and ground staff at Pisa and Florence airports have their own 24-hour strike the same day. Trains stop from 9 p.m. Thursday, as reported yesterday.
Who is striking
- USB (Unione Sindacale di Base): national general strike on Friday, October 30, including air transport from 00:00 to 23:59.
- USB Lavoro Privato: a separate 24-hour strike on October 30 by staff of Toscana Aeroporti, GH Toscana and Consulta at Pisa and Florence airports.
- Three other general strikes registered for October 30 (USI-CIT, ADL-Cobas and related groups, and CIB-Unicobas) do not include air transport.
Strike hours and protected services
| Service | Strike hours | Protected |
|---|---|---|
| Flights (nationwide) | All day Fri Oct. 30 | All scheduled departures 7–10 a.m. and 6–9 p.m.; outside those windows, one intercontinental departure per continent and one daily link to and from the islands |
| Pisa and Florence ground services | 24 hours, Fri Oct. 30 | Full service in the two windows; at least 20% of normal outside them |
| Trains | 9 p.m. Thu Oct. 29 – 8:59 p.m. Fri Oct. 30 | Published lists of guaranteed trains (see our Oct. 26 report) |
| Motorways | From 10 p.m. Thu Oct. 29 | TBA |
Could it still change?
Yes. On October 22 Italy’s strike-guarantee commission referred the strike to the transport minister, who can move, shorten or set service levels for it, normally at least 48 hours before it begins. As of Tuesday, October 27, no such order had been reported and the air stoppage was still on the register. No airline cancellation notices for October 30 had been reported (TBA).
What it means for airline travelers
- Aim for a flight in the 7–10 a.m. or 6–9 p.m. windows on Friday — those departures are protected. Flights outside them are the likeliest to be cancelled, and standby passengers will be competing with rebooked travelers.
- Going through Pisa or Florence on Friday? Expect slower check-in, baggage and passenger services outside the protected hours.
- If your trip can move, flying Thursday or Saturday avoids both the air and rail strikes.
- Getting to the airport by train will be hard from 9 p.m. Thursday; plan a bus, taxi or transfer.
- Check with your airline on October 28–29 in case the minister changes the strike or airlines publish cancellations.
