Update — first-day results of the truckers’ strike, which we reported when it began on Oct. 26.

October 27, 2026 — Update: The first day of Mexico’s national truckers’ strike reached all 31 states, according to La Jornada, and a highway blockade near Cancún left nearly 300 people unable to reach the airport in time for their flights. Most blockades were lifted on Monday night, October 26, and farmers called off the road blockades they had planned for Tuesday, but truckers say their strike remains open-ended while talks with the government continue.

What changed since Monday

  • Airports hit: In Quintana Roo, a blockade on Federal Highway 307 between Playa del Carmen and Cancún caused queues of up to 20 km and, per La Jornada, nearly 300 people missed flights. Near Mexico City, a partial blockade affected the road to Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA).
  • Scale: Truckers protested in all 31 states, led by the freight chamber CANACAR and the trucking group Hamotac.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 27: Most blockades ended Monday night, with some lasting into the early morning. The State of Mexico office of the federal transport ministry (SICT) reported closures on the México–Toluca highway at Plazas Outlet Lerma and the La Marquesa toll booth. Further blockades were threatened but not confirmed at the Tepotzotlán toll booth (México–Querétaro), México–Pachuca, México–Puebla and Chamapa–Lechería, and on routes in Veracruz and Puebla–Tlaxcala.
  • Farmers stand down: The Confederación Agropecuaria de México suspended blockades it had planned for 9 a.m. Tuesday in 10 states, including the State of Mexico, Guanajuato and Michoacán, after meeting federal officials.
  • Talks: The Interior Ministry (Segob) urged CANACAR and other groups to keep talking. Meetings with the Finance Ministry (Hacienda) were set for Tuesday on the 2027 revenue law, which would cut a toll-related tax benefit; talks on highway security were to follow.
  • End date: TBA. No deal had been announced.

Roads reported affected on Monday

Area Roads named in reports
Mexico City / State of Mexico México–Toluca, Paseo Tollocan, Toluca–Atlacomulco, Chamapa–Lechería, México–Querétaro, México–Pachuca, México–Puebla, México–Cuernavaca, Calzada Vallejo
Quintana Roo Federal Highway 307, Playa del Carmen–Cancún
Veracruz Xalapa–Banderilla, Veracruz–Cardel, Orizaba–Puebla, Ciudad Mendoza–Córdoba, Nuevo Teapa–Cosoleacaque
Puebla / Oaxaca / Morelos México–Puebla at San Martín Texmelucan, Puebla–Acatzingo, Tehuacán–Oaxaca, Cuernavaca bypass
Other Durango–Mazatlán (Garabitos toll booth, no blockade), Culiacán, Río Bravo–Reynosa, Ciudad Mante–Ciudad Valles

What it means for airline travelers

  • Leave much earlier for Cancún airport if you’re staying along the Riviera Maya; Highway 307 is the only main road and a blockade there already cost people their flights. Ask your hotel about the road before you set off.
  • Flying standby out of Cancún or Mexico City? Missing a flight because of a road blockade can push you onto later, fuller flights — build in a spare day where you can.
  • For AIFA and Toluca airports, check the state of the highways before leaving; reports name the Chamapa–Lechería and México–Toluca roads among those affected.
  • Blockades can appear with little notice. Follow local news and road updates, and don’t try to drive through a blockade.
  • US citizens can enroll in STEP and Canadians in Registration of Canadians Abroad for alerts.
