October 29, 2026 — IndiGo (6E), India’s largest airline, cut its quarterly loss even as its fuel bill rose by two-thirds, and it flew fewer passengers than a year ago after trimming capacity.
What happened
InterGlobe Aviation, IndiGo’s parent, reported results for the July–September quarter (its second quarter of fiscal 2027) on Thursday, October 29. CEO Willie Walsh said the quarter was seasonally weak and was hit by “exceptionally elevated fuel costs” and geopolitical turmoil. He said cutting capacity and managing fares helped revenue but only partly offset higher costs.
| Measure | Q2 FY27 (Jul–Sep 2026) | Q2 FY26 |
|---|---|---|
| Net loss | ₹1,879 crore | ₹2,582 crore |
| Revenue from operations | ₹23,364 crore (+25.9%) | ₹18,555 crore |
| Fuel costs | ₹9,966.8 crore (+67.2%) | — |
| Non-fuel costs | ₹16,221.6 crore (+0.6%) | — |
| Capacity (ASKs) | 40.8 billion (−1.0%) | — |
| Passengers | 27.5 million (−4.7%) | — |
| Load factor | 80.3% (down 2.2 points) | — |
Fleet, network and cash
- Fleet: 442 aircraft at September 30, 2026.
- Network: 97 domestic and 36 international destinations.
- Cash: ₹52,685.4 crore in total, including ₹39,929 crore of free cash. Total debt, including lease liabilities, was ₹87,303.1 crore.
- Guidance: TBA; none was reported with the results.
The Free Press Journal attributed the loss to high fuel prices and a weaker rupee.
What it means for non-revs
- A little more room on board. Load factor fell 2.2 points to 80.3%, so IndiGo flights were on average slightly emptier than a year ago.
- But fewer flights to choose from. IndiGo cut capacity by 1% and is managing fares tightly. The airline is filling fewer seats with paying customers at higher fares, so open seats can disappear quickly on busy routes.
- Watch for more schedule trimming. Walsh named capacity reduction as one of the tools IndiGo is using against fuel costs. Check the schedule close to departure.
