DUBLIN, Nov. 6, 2026 — Aer Lingus will cut its flying by 6% and up to 500 roles could go after nine-month operating profit fell 57%. CEO Lynne Embleton said she will press ahead with the job cuts.

The numbers

Measure Result
Q3 2026 operating profit €142m, down €28m (16%) from €170m
Nine-month operating profit €108m, down 57% from €250m
Q3 passengers Up 1.8%
Target operating margin 12–15%

Aer Lingus blamed fuel, supplier and carbon costs, plus stronger competition and weaker fares on the North Atlantic. It expects these pressures to last into 2027. Embleton said: “Increased competition, particularly across the North Atlantic, has fundamentally changed our operating environment.”

Cuts and changes

  • Capacity: down 6%, mainly by dropping lower-margin routes. Which routes: TBA.
  • Jobs: up to 500 roles, subject to ongoing consultation with unions. The unions involved were not named. Timing: TBA.
  • People: Embleton asked management, unions and staff to cooperate. She told the Irish Examiner the airline must “adapt as a business to a competitive environment that is here to stay.”
  • Product:
    • Starlink Wi-Fi is on almost all long-haul aircraft and is now rolling out to short-haul.
    • Ten A330s will be retrofitted in 2027.
    • Premium economy will launch in 2027.

What it means for non-revs

  • A 6% capacity cut means fewer seats to stand by for, especially on routes that keep fewer frequencies. Until the route list is published, recheck loads before you plan.
  • Union consultation on up to 500 roles is just starting. Watch for any industrial-relations escalation that could disrupt operations, although none has been announced.
  • Starlink on short-haul and the A330 retrofits will make the onboard experience better on Aer Lingus pass trips from 2027.
