MONTREAL, Nov. 7, 2026 — Air Canada is taking its Boeing 737 MAX 8s off three transatlantic routes, including year-round Halifax–London Heathrow, and moving the jets to Air Canada Rouge to rebuild the leisure carrier’s sun and North American network.

The changes

Route MAX 8 service What happens
Halifax–London Heathrow Since April 2022 MAX ends December 2026 (exact date TBA); an A321XLR is expected on the route in 2027
Montreal–Edinburgh June 2025 to September 2026 Not returning on the MAX
Montreal–Nantes June to July 2026 only Not returning on the MAX
  • The aircraft join Rouge to refresh its leisure network across North America, the Caribbean and Central America. The transfer started in March 2026 on Vancouver–Edmonton and Vancouver–Kelowna and continues through the end of 2026.
  • Rouge’s MAX 8s seat 177: 12 Business, 18 Preferred and 147 Economy.
  • Transatlantic MAX routes still planned for next summer: Halifax–Brussels, Montreal–Keflavik, Toronto–Keflavik and Toronto–Ponta Delgada.
  • Simple Flying calculates that the MAX’s share of Air Canada’s transatlantic flying falls from 6.8% to 3.5%, with Q3 departures dropping from 329 in 2026 to 188 in 2027.

What it means for non-revs

  • The MAX leaves Halifax–Heathrow after December. What flies the route until the A321XLR arrives in 2027 has not been published (TBA), so Atlantic Canada standby travelers heading to London should watch the schedule and keep Toronto or Montreal routings as a fallback.
  • More Rouge MAX flying to the sun and within North America adds seats on leisure routes this winter, which can help standby chances on those markets.
  • Rouge’s 177-seat layout has only 12 Business seats, so upgrades on those flights will be scarce for pass riders.
