Spirit Airbus A320neo N974NK BWI MD2

October 3, 2026 — A third airline union has asked a bankruptcy court to stop defunct Spirit Airlines (NK) from selling its internal data to Google. The Allied Pilots Association, which represents American Airlines pilots, says the $10 million deal could undermine aviation safety.

What happened

Spirit stopped flying on May 2, 2026. Its estate is selling what is left, including the airline’s internal data and custom software. Google has agreed to pay $10 million and says it will use the material to develop products and train AI models.

The Allied Pilots Association (APA) filed its objection on Tuesday, September 29, Business Insider reports. It joins the Air Line Pilots Association, which represented Spirit’s pilots, and the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, which represented its cabin crew.

APA says the sale would expose confidential employment and training information belonging to more than 700 former Spirit pilots. Its wider argument is about safety reporting. Voluntary safety programs work because crews trust that what they disclose stays confidential. APA says selling that kind of record “threatens to have a chilling effect across all commercial airlines.”

Google says the data will be scrubbed of identifying information before it receives it.

The data set is large. TravelPulse reported it includes about 100 million emails and 500 million Microsoft Teams items, along with code and operational records. The unions doubt that de-identification can hold when links between data sets are kept.

First “Blue Bees” graduate at United

There was better news for some former Spirit crew this week. On October 1, 79 flight attendants graduated from a United Airlines training class, and 23 of them came from Spirit. The Association of Flight Attendants says it is the first sizeable group of Spirit flight attendants to finish training at another airline since the shutdown. The union puts the number of Spirit employees who lost their jobs at 17,000.

What it means for non-revs

There is no pass-travel angle here. The story matters to airline people for two other reasons.

  • Your records could outlive your airline. The fight is over whether an airline’s emails, training files and safety reports can be sold after it fails. The court’s answer will set an example for the next airline bankruptcy.
  • Safety reporting depends on trust. Three unions are telling the court that crews will hold back if confidential reports can be sold. That concern reaches every carrier with a voluntary reporting program.
  • Former Spirit colleagues are starting over. Those now flying for United or American began again at the bottom of the seniority list, which also means the bottom of the standby list where boarding priority follows seniority.
