Also this week: a Madrid–Dallas flight diverted to New York with most of its lavatories out of order, a reserve pay grievance got an arbitration date, and American confirmed its largest-ever Admirals Club for Charlotte.

Flight 37 diverts with two working lavatories
On Tuesday, October 6, American Flight 37 from Madrid to Dallas Fort Worth, a Boeing 777-200 with 287 people on board, diverted to New York JFK about 10 hours into the flight. Six of its eight lavatories had failed. The FAA said the crew “reported an inadequate number of operational lavatories.” The aircraft spent more than three hours at JFK and then continued to DFW.
Reserve sit rig arbitration
The Association of Professional Flight Attendants says its presidential grievance over sit rig time and pay for reserve flight attendants goes to arbitration on October 14–15, 2026, at the Sheraton DFW Airport Hotel in Irving, Texas. Members in good standing may attend. A decision date is TBA.
Charlotte lounges
American plans a new Admirals Club of more than 40,000 square feet on the mezzanine of Charlotte’s main atrium, reachable from Concourses A, B and C. It will be the largest in the network. Construction starts before the end of 2026; the opening date is TBA. A Flagship Lounge is also planned for Charlotte, with no timeline given.
What it means for non-revs
- Family and friends who want in: the hiring window is short. Flight privileges come with the job, but so do about two years on reserve and a base that may not be your first choice.
- Long-haul reliability matters for standby. A diversion like Flight 37’s makes a late aircraft for its next rotation and misconnected passengers who take open seats at DFW. Check the inbound aircraft before a tight connection.
- Reserve flight attendants should follow the October 14–15 arbitration, which bears directly on reserve pay.
- Charlotte lounge relief is years, not months, away. Lounge access for non-revs still depends on your own membership or card.
