October 7, 2026 — The UK Foreign Office updated its Tanzania travel advice on Tuesday to report wildfires in the Kilimanjaro area. Three climbing routes on the mountain are closed, with no reopening date given.
The details
- Routes closed: Rongai, Lemosho and Londorosi, as of October 6.
- Reopening: Not announced (TBA).
- Other routes: The UK notice names only these three. It does not say whether the other routes are open or restricted.
- Official advice: Follow instructions from local authorities and contact your tour operator.
- US and Canadian advisories: We found no change for Tanzania in the window.
- Also in force: Tanzania began requiring inbound travel insurance on October 1, as the UK noted in an earlier update.
What it means for airline travelers
- Booked on one of the three routes? Contact your operator now. Ask whether they will move you to another route, postpone or refund.
- Do not fly in on standby expecting to sort it out locally. Permits, guides and porters are booked by route and date.
- Check your travel insurance. Ask whether it covers a trek cancelled by a park closure, and confirm it meets Tanzania’s new insurance requirement.
- Smoke may affect views and air quality around Moshi and the park gates. Kilimanjaro International Airport is not reported affected.
- Register with STEP (US) or Registration of Canadians Abroad before a remote trek.
