October 11, 2026 — Hurricane Simon, a Category 4 storm, is at the coast of west-central Mexico this morning. The Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo airports are closed, the ports are shut to navigation, and Puerto Vallarta’s airport is not due to reopen before 8 a.m. Monday.

Update: yesterday’s story had Manzanillo’s commercial flights suspended and Puerto Vallarta’s airport still open. Since then both airports have closed, every Sunday flight at both has been cancelled, and the storm’s center has moved to within about 60 miles of Manzanillo.

The storm

Item Status, Sunday morning, October 11
Strength 145 mph sustained winds, 937 mb at 9 a.m. CST (150 mph at 6 a.m.)
Position 19.2°N 105.3°W at 9 a.m. At 6 a.m. it was about 60 miles west of Manzanillo and 110 miles south-southeast of Cabo Corrientes
Movement North-northwest at 7 mph
Hurricane warning Punta San Telmo to El Roblito, plus Las Islas Marías
Rain A further 10 to 20 inches through Monday, isolated totals near 30 inches in Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco

The National Hurricane Center expects the center to be near or just inland of the coast later today and to stay very close to the coast on Monday. It gives no exact landfall time. The Weather Channel’s forecast takes the core over or near Puerto Vallarta later Sunday. The Rio Times reports the storm is expected to dissipate over land by Tuesday, October 13.

Airports

  • Puerto Vallarta (PVR): closed since 6 p.m. Saturday. Operator GAP plans to reopen at 8 a.m. Monday, October 12, if weather and inspections allow. Every flight on Sunday, October 11, is cancelled.
  • Manzanillo (ZLO): closed from 6 p.m. Saturday. Airlines cancelled all commercial flights for Sunday. Commercial restart date: TBA.
  • GAP asked passengers not to go to either airport and to stay in their hotels or in official shelters.

Ports and cruise ships

  • Mexico’s navy has fully restricted navigation at Manzanillo, San Blas and Lázaro Cárdenas. Puerto Vallarta is closed to all vessels. Reopening dates: TBA.
  • Virgin Voyages: Brilliant Lady’s October 10 cruise from Los Angeles goes to Santa Barbara (October 12), San Diego (October 13) and Ensenada (October 14) instead of Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta.
  • Carnival Cruise Line: Carnival’s latest update lists Carnival Panorama’s October 10 sailing from Long Beach as operating as planned. No change to its Mexican ports has been published.
  • No cruise line has announced new Puerto Vallarta or Manzanillo cancellations in the past 24 hours.

Farther north, Tropical Storm Rachel has broken up over the U.S. Southwest and the National Hurricane Center has issued its last advisory. Coastal flooding is expected on Southern California beaches today. Fox 11 Los Angeles reported a coastal flood advisory for Long Beach through 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 13.

What it means for airline travelers

  • There are no flights to list for at PVR or ZLO today. The earliest possible restart at Puerto Vallarta is Monday morning, and that depends on damage inspections.
  • When flights resume, airlines rebook cancelled revenue passengers first. Expect very few standby seats out of Puerto Vallarta for several days. If you must get home, look at a confirmed ticket or at Guadalajara (GDL) once roads are open.
  • If you are in the area now, stay where your hotel or the authorities place you. Do not go to the airport until your airline confirms a flight.
  • Mexican Riviera cruises from Los Angeles and Long Beach are still sailing, so flights to the embarkation city are not affected by Simon. Allow extra time on the roads near the Long Beach waterfront while the flood advisory is in effect.
  • Booked on a Mexican Riviera cruise this week? Expect port swaps or sea days. Weather changes do not normally bring a fare refund. Check your line’s notice for port-fee refunds or onboard credit.
  • No interline or travel-industry rate changes are tied to the storm.
