October 12, 2026 — Six Delhi Metro stations in the city centre were shut for most of Monday as opposition parties marched on the Supreme Court over alleged voter-roll deletions. Organisers say protests will continue, so more disruption in central New Delhi is likely.
What happened Monday
- Metro closures: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation closed entry and exit at Patel Chowk, Janpath, Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, Central Secretariat and Barakhamba Road from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Interchange between lines stayed open (The Week).
- Traffic: Delhi Traffic Police diversions began at 6 a.m. across New and Central Delhi.
- Security: Police stopped the march at a barricade on Bhagwan Dass Marg. Al Jazeera reports hundreds marched and that thousands were detained over the weekend.
- Next steps: Opposition leaders filed a Supreme Court petition on Monday evening, and the Delhi High Court is due to hear a plea on Tuesday about violence against protesters. Protest groups vow to continue until the Chief Election Commissioner resigns. No further march dates have been announced (TBA).
What it means for airline travelers
- If you are staying in or near Connaught Place, Janpath or the government district, check DMRC announcements each morning; stations there are the first to close during protests.
- Allow extra time for road trips between central Delhi and Indira Gandhi International Airport while diversions are in place.
- Avoid demonstrations and police lines. Follow local media and register with STEP (US) or Registration of Canadians Abroad.
