PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico, October 13, 2026 — Update to our October 12 story. Puerto Vallarta’s Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) reopened to all flights, including commercial service, from one minute past midnight on Tuesday, October 13. That is earlier than the 8 a.m. Tuesday time announced on Sunday. The airport had been closed since 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 10.

What changed since Monday

  • Phased reopening: airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) opened PVR to official aircraft only from 2:30 p.m. on Monday, October 12. All operations, including commercial flights, resumed at 00:01 on Tuesday, October 13, local time, Quadratín Jalisco reports. GAP coordinated with Mexico’s civil aviation agency (AFAC) and air navigation service (SENEAM).
  • Brought forward: GAP said improving weather allowed it to move the reopening up from the earlier 8 a.m. Tuesday target, according to Rus Tourism News.
  • Flights depend on each airline: GAP says individual flights will resume on each airline’s own schedule and asks passengers to confirm with their airline before going to the airport. Which airlines are flying today: TBA.
  • Damage: no damage to the airport has been reported in our sources.

The storm

  • Simon has weakened from Category 4 to Category 2 and is moving slowly north along the coast, Open Jaw reports, citing the Associated Press.
  • The U.S. National Hurricane Center warned that heavy rain from Simon will affect parts of west-central Mexico over the next few days, with a risk of flooding and mudslides.
  • Beaches in Puerto Vallarta remain under red flags with 2–3 metre waves forecast, according to Open Jaw.

What it means for non-revs

  • Getting out will be tough all week. Three days of cancelled flights left a large backlog. Expect full flights from PVR to U.S. and Canadian hubs, and very limited standby seats.
  • Getting in is easier than getting out. Southbound flights may have space, but make sure you have a realistic plan to get home.
  • Airlines need time to reposition. Aircraft and crews were moved away for the storm, so some airlines may run reduced schedules for a few days. Check your airline’s schedule, not just the airport’s status.
  • Watch the weather. Simon is still bringing rain to the region, and the forecast could change.
  • Carry on. With schedules being rebuilt, delayed bags and misconnects are more likely.
