October 16, 2026 — Carnival Cruise Line (Carnival Corporation) will cut its Australian fleet from four ships to two in March 2028, withdrawing Carnival Luminosa and Carnival Adventure and citing uncertainty over the country’s cruise rules.

The ships

Ship Last Australian cruise What happens next
Carnival Luminosa Final voyage from Sydney, March 15, 2028 Next deployment not disclosed (TBA). Has sailed seasonally from Brisbane since 2022.
Carnival Adventure (2,600 passengers) Final cruise from Sydney ends March 20, 2028 Repositions to North America and will not return for the 2028–29 season as planned. Homeport TBA.
Carnival Splendor — Stays, sailing year-round from Sydney
Carnival Encounter — Stays, sailing year-round from Brisbane

Why

Carnival says ships are deployed years in advance and it needs long-term certainty and globally competitive operating conditions. The Australian government recently extended the coastal trading exemption, which lets cruise ships sail between Australian ports, to the end of 2028 while it works on a permanent licensing regime. Australia country manager Peter Little called the extension “a welcome but interim step,” adding that Carnival is more exposed than other lines because it is the only brand with ships based in Australia year-round. CLIA Australasia said the move will cost the Australian visitor economy hundreds of millions of dollars.

No cancellations or guest compensation were announced; Carnival is encouraging guests to sail on the two ships over the next 18 months. Little said the line’s 2028–29 deployment will be released in the coming weeks (dates TBA).

What it means for airline travelers

  • Existing bookings stand. Both ships keep sailing their Australian programs until March 2028; no sailings have been cancelled.
  • Fewer departures after March 2028. From then, Carnival will offer one year-round ship each in Sydney (SYD) and Brisbane (BNE), so popular dates may sell out sooner.
  • Long-haul planning: if you are flying from North America to join a Sydney or Brisbane sailing, arrive at least a day or two early; trans-Pacific flights are long and seats can be tight for standby travelers.
  • A ship coming to North America: Carnival Adventure’s new homeport has not been announced; watch for it in the 2028–29 deployment release.
  • No change to interline or travel-industry cruise rates was mentioned.
